The thing about watercolor that makes it so beautiful is also what makes it so difficult to work with!

Watercolor paint is lightweight, loose and subtle. Its transparency offers enormous potential for creating luminous works that have a mystical, contemplative vibe.

And yet, most artists are hesitant to truly engage the medium because it can be hard to control and layer.

In this course, I will teach you a wet-on-wet painting technique that is foundational to my entire body of creative work:

the Layered Wash Technique.

I perfected this method for creating evocative and atmospheric landscapes over nearly three years. And now, I want to teach it to you so that you can add to it your creative tool-belt.

In this course you will:
  • Learn how to choose watercolor materials for optimizing water control

  • Master the basic principles of watercolors to ensure a strong foundation that lends itself to learning more advanced techniques quickly and stress-free

  • Learn how to layer 4-6 watercolor washes to create the appearance of mist in your landscapes

  • Understand how to work with limited and more diverse color palettes, including warm and cool colors, without creating a muddy mess

  • Learn to consider composition, perspective, and negative space principles in creating expansive and realistic landscapes, including skies

  • Learn how to consistently create work that is visually pleasing and emotionally evocative

The 8-week curriculum

Module 1. The Layered Wash Technique

After reviewing all the most relevant (and seemingly complex) watercolor painting principles, learn to fearlessly layer watercolors to create highly pigmented, color-dense paintings.

Module 2. Introducing a Colorful Palette

Now that you've learned how to create multi-layered landscapes, let's spice things up and add more color. Learn exactly how I work with opposing colors (like yellow & blue for instance), WITHOUT creating mud on my paper.

Module 3. Negative Space: Adding by Taking Away

Building on the basic watercolor principles introduced in Module 1, you will now learn several methods for playing with negative space. Learn to remove paint and play around with composition to create a sense depth in your landscapes.

Module 4. Playing with Sunlight

Until now in the course, all the emphasis has been on the land portion of your landscape paintings. Let's add some intrigue to the sky with warm sunlight. Learn how to incorporate the sun, and create rays of light as it peeks through the trees.

Module 5. Painting the Forest

Having painted the misty contours of your landscape, create pleasantly unexpected contrast in your landscapes with highly detailed elements. Learn to paint coniferour and deciduous tree silhouettes & incorporate them into your scene.

Module 6. Dramatic Watercolor Skies

Sometimes the sky is the most dynamic & intriguing part of a landscape. Bravely use high-contrast color combinations to create expansive skies that immediate catch the eye.

Module 7. Creating Evocative Water Scenes

Mastering the Layered Wash Technique paves the way for creating dynamic water scenes that stir the soul, too. Learn to create gorgeous, realistic tree-line reflections on calm water.

Module 8. Painting From the Inside Out

It's time to harness all the traction you've gained & bring it all together. Integrate all the elements of your landscape with your unique inspiration. But don't forget to follow the composition & focal point guidelines I lay out in this module.
