Looking into the Distance

Capturing Sunlight

Add depth and more diverse features to your landscapes using negative space and complementary color combinations. Call forth the foreground, middle ground and background of your terrain.

Tree Study: Painting Evergreens

Tree Study: Painting Evergreens

Blend the essences of drawing and painting. Create the finest brushstrokes with tiny brushes by balancing the pigment/water ratio. Explore the calming effects of painting large forests full of realistic evergreen trees.

Integrating Trees into Your Landscape

The realism of your final landscape is largely based on how you incorporate the trees. Learn how to see nuances in the texture of your background wash painting to determine where and how to paint trees.

The Deciduous Forest After Autumn

Watch as seemingly random lines come together to form the skeleton of gorgeous, barren trees. Combine multiple different brush types to paint ever-smaller branches from the center to the outer edges of the tree.

Painting Dramatic Skies

Create stormy or more subtle moody skies. Learn how to use layers of contrasting values and unsuspecting colors to create evocative skies that can serve as the focal point of your landscape.

The Brilliance of Watercolor

The thing about watercolor that makes it so beautiful is also what makes it so difficult to work with!
Watercolor paint is lightweight, loose and subtle.
Its transparency offers enormous potential for creating luminous works that have a mystical, contemplative vibe.
Many watercolorists lose that transparency by working in single layers; they fear of creating a muddy mess!

I am all about letting the intuition take over and shedding perfectionism.
And being willing to risk making muddy mess!
